Everything is set for the final preparations for the community Christmas dinner at McAlester and Krebs – with plans to offer a free vacation dinner to residents of these two towns who register to participate before the deadline expires.
This year’s Christmas dinner menu includes ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, dessert, and a Pepsi.
The deadline to register to participate in the event is 5 p.m. Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24. The Community Christmas Dinner is intended for anyone residing within the city limits of McAlester or Krebs, with no age or income limit in place. One volunteer said the hope is to make sure everyone who lives in those two towns and wants a free holiday dinner gets one.
Anyone living in McAlester or Krebs who has not yet registered can do so by calling 918-421-2920 or can register online at McAlesterChristmas.com, provided they do so before the deadline. 5 p.m. These are also the ways to call or register online for anyone interested in volunteering to help deliver the holiday dinners on Christmas Day.
Those who volunteer to help will receive instructions. Plans call for all meals to be delivered by 1 p.m. on Christmas Day, which is Saturday, December 25.
With no pickup or take-out delivery, one of the volunteers helping the project said volunteers are her lifeblood. All of the nearly 3,000 meals that are expected to be prepared will be delivered to your doorstep.
This year’s event marks 46 years since the first group of volunteers came together to offer a free Christmas dinner to any McAlester or Krebs resident who wanted it. They also wanted to remain anonymous, a tradition that has continued for almost half a century.
Once again, the Community Christmas Dinner is fully funded by donations, volunteers organizing the event and preparing the food for free. Anyone who wishes to help with a donation can do so by mailing it to the community Christmas dinner; P.O. Box 291; McAlester, okay; 74502. Checks should be made payable to McAlester Community Christmas, the volunteers said.
