SAAC serves the local community during the holiday season

BAKERSFIELD, California – Despite a busy season filled with training, competitions, classes, tests and articles, the CSU Bakersfield Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has partnered with the ASI group on campus to organize a fundraiser of very successful Christmas toys. The two groups have combined to collect nearly 100 toys to donate to Toys for Tots while raising $ 2,800 in the past month.

“I would like to thank the athletics department, ASI and the CSUB community for the toy donation,” said Vanessa Austin, vice president of CSUB SAAC. “But I finally want to thank SAAC for everything they’ve done, from collecting toys to shopping for families. I really don’t think it could have been done without them.”

The Christmas toy drive started on November 15 when SAAC and ASI challenged each other in a two-week friendly competition to see which group could collect the most toys. To encourage the challenge, SAAC President Kris Rogic and ASI President Stephanie Magana both pledged to take a face pie if their side collects fewer toys. In the end, SAAC collected 54 children’s toys while ASI collected 38 still fantastic toys and Austin “had the honor” of delivering the pie to Magana’s face.

At one CSUB men’s basketball game in particular, the `Runner SAAC team collected a handful of toys as well as $ 575 in cash donations. With that money, they were able to buy building blocks, dolls, blankets, Play-Doh and more, all of which were donated to three less fortunate families. SAAC worked with a local organization called ShePower, led by Arleana Waller, to find these families and Austin said “it was truly an honor to see the smiles of the children we gave Christmas to”.

The Athletics Department of CSUB continues to be proud of the efforts of its student-athlete runners, in the community, in the classroom and in competition.
