Helping local industry build its own brand

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia Design Council has been asked to play a more aggressive role under the “Create Your Own Design as Your Own Brand” program and help local industry by providing design guidance and advice.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Lim Ban Hong (Photo) said that currently, many industry players are still adopting the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) approach even though the government has conducted various campaigns to encourage the transformation to Original Brand Manufacturer (OBM).

In his speech at Malaysia Good Design Award (MGDA) 2021 2021 and Certified Industrial Designer (CIDe) here recently, he said that design is an important aspect to emphasize in creating a product, and an important factor in brand building and improving a company’s competitiveness.

“With design advice or design elements sought by advice, more industries, especially among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), understand the importance of design and focus on design elements in the manufacture of their products.

“It needs to get out there and more awareness programs need to be done nationwide to raise awareness of the importance of quality design to improve business performance. This in turn will further drive performance export business,” he said.

Established under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) in 1993, MRM, among other things, acts as a think tank and program advisor to advance the expertise, capabilities and standards of the design industry in the country.

MGDA, on the other hand, is the highest design recognition from the Malaysian government through MRM which endorses products that carry quality in design manufacturing.

According to Lim, the number of products applying for MGDA recognition increased from 107 products in 2015 to 326 in 2018.

“In 2020 and 2021, a total of 252 products from different categories were received for evaluation and out of this total, 26 products from 19 companies were found to be within specification and eligible to receive the 2021 MGDA,” he said. .

At the event, for the first time, the CIDe, the highest honor given to local industrial designers, was awarded to 16 people, all of whom will carry the CIDe title in their name.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Design Council director Sulaiman Arshad said 13 categories were listed in MGDA 2021, including living room and bedroom design, accessories, jewelry and handicrafts.

“The recognition by the award shows that the country’s design industry is growing rapidly and has expertise in producing finished products, and they should seize the opportunity to continue working with the Malaysian Design Council,” said- he declared.- Bernama
